Months of hard work and dedication culminated on Tuesday the 23 August, when Team Nangamay and Team Heavy DUTY from year 10 Engineering represented Caringbah High School at the Sutherland Region F1 in Schools competition.

The day began early at Engadine Community Centre, with both teams being given approximately an hour to kit out their pit displays with cars, spare parts, portfolios, posters, streamers and balloons. Racing began at 9:30am with Team Nangamay taking on Menai High School over a twenty metre-long course. Despite a shaky start, some quick reflexes and some engineering ingenuity had Nangamay on top with a time of 1.280 seconds. While they were unable to beat Port Hacking, Team Heavy DUTY was also extremely quick, putting up very competitive times.

However there was more to the competition than just having a fast car. In the racing intermission, both teams were required to give a verbal presentation and to attend interviews relating to our portfolio and car design. Marks were awarded for content, knowledge and delivery. Both teams also enjoyed meeting the other teams and getting the feedback of teachers, judges, parents and the other competitors.

The day was to finish with a knockout-racing tournament. Unfortunately, as Team Nangamay was seeded number one and Team Heavy DUTY was seeded number four, the two Caringbah teams had to face off in the semi-finals. Team Nangamay came out on top, but not before a valiant effort from Heavy DUTY and four exceptionally close races. Nangamay would go on to beat Engadine High in the final; a terrific effort considering Engadine has had two international finalists in the last few years.

All the teams then congregated to hear the heavily anticipated results from a fantastic day of competition. Congratulations to Thomas, Billy, Zac, Anton and Aaron of Team Nangamay for winning six trophies; including Best Portfolio, Fastest Car in the Professional Class, Best Presentation, Best Marketing and the overall Regional Champions. As overall region champions, Team Nangamay will be representing the region and the school at the State Finals at Western Sydney University. Congratulations also to Connie, Adam, Henry and Josh of Team Heavy DUTY for putting up a very strong and competitive car, as well as a fantastic portfolio and presentation.

We would like to sincerely thank Mr Parker for guiding us through the F1 in Schools program, as well as Mr Arbib and Mr Smytheman for taking us to the competition. We would also like to thank all of Nangamay supporters of our charity The Ponting Foundation. Our kind supporters were Bundeena Outdoor Adventures, Smile Design, Campaign Monitor, Just Cuts Miranda and Beaumont Tiles Caringbah. Our generous sponsors included Crockers Paint Miranda and Minuteman Press Caringbah. Team Heavy DUTY would like to thank there kind sponsors including L. H. Brown Real Estate & Co. Bankstown, Bunnings Caringbah, Officeworks Taren Point and DJ Hard Korsun.

Team Nangamay are very much looking forward to the State finals in November!
