The competition is open to years 8 and 9 students, with the opportunity to experience what it might be like as a future engineering student or a professional.
On Tuesday, 1 August, year 8 students, Asmi, Georgia, Abby and I, went with Ms Ihnatko, to the Art Gallery of NSW to test out the balsa bridge we had built and designed over the past few weeks. We were given the materials by Aurecon (the people running the competition) and had to use only those to make the bridge. On judging day the bridges are load tested and assessed for visual appeal, workmanship, creativity and functionality. When tested, our bridge held 14kg.
We all learnt a lot from the engineers, about not only bridges, but other career paths to engineering. We all enjoyed working together as a team and are glad that we got the opportunity to participate in the competition.
